Located on Huaihai Middle Road close to Huating Road, there are three apartment buildings share common elements in both style and building materials. The front building of the Gascogne Apartments match the Hanray Apartments just down the street: all are clad in yellow ceramic tiles and their broad front facades have a strong central vertical focus from which radiate recessed balconies.
All three buildings were completed between 1934 and 1939 by the prolific French architectural firm Leonard, Veysseyre and Kurze.
The Gascogne apartments still hold up remarkably well, attesting to the quality of the construction and material. The plumbing, light fixtures, window and door hardware and heating systems are all the original. Still functioning also are the call bells located in each room.
